The quote which kicked up a huge sh*t storm, and finger pointing session on social media!
That quote was actually a small exert of a large six page article published in the CrossFit Journal focusing on the age old argument of ‘Are Women The Weaker Sex’. In fact the comment from Elisabeth was a comparison to women’s tennis where the article states that although being ranked below Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova rakes in $23 million in endorsements to Williams’s $13 million.
Now it has never been a secret that sex sells. From the Calvin Klein adverts to the Diet Coke Break adverts, the beauty of the human body has been used as a marketing tool for decades. With the juggernaut of social media taking over our lives though, a new breed of self-marketed person have used their natural wares to earn endorsements, and for some, a very good living.
The equality discussion will always be there. Of course we should all be treated as equals but should certain criteria be loosened just to accommodate others!!? I will let you guys ponder and discuss (talking real world here, not CrossFit).
Also Elisabeth asks “Are there any men (in CrossFit) who are sponsored who are just basically hot? I can’t think of any.” This may be true for now but you just have to look at all the internet gym bro’s and PT’s who have HUGE likes and followings. I think for now the CrossFit community just has a better bullsh*t detector and can tell when someone is using awful tekkers or ROM, and well…just Using!!!
